Created in 1928, the domaine Duclaux never stops making progress. Nowadays, quality of his Côte-Rôtie is recognized by the specialised press all over the world.

Article published by James Molesworth on the winespectator-online (march 2010).

Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2009

The wine spectator : 93 points
Shows a lot of range, with blackberry, blueberry and dark plum fruit woven with toasty spice, black tea and anise notes. Long and polished through the finish, with a graphite edge buried deep in the fleshy fruit. Drink now through 2020.—J.M.

Robert Parker : 93 points

The Duclaux brothers have turned out two exceptional Cote Roties in 2009. Both are seductive, fruit-forward efforts that are capable of lasting a decade.

Even richer, fuller, more structured and powerful, the 2009 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge exhibits a more saturated ruby/plum/purple color, full body and notes of licorice, raspberries, black currants, forest floor and spring flowers. Drink this super Cote Rotie now and over the next decade.

John Livingstone: *****

The two sons have split the wine into two cuvees, successfully. Now one of the leading names, thier vineyards centred in the southern sector.

(casks) bright, promising dark red robe, black tints. Good, safe bouquet – it is tight, led by light game notes and ripe black fruit – the ripeness well done, and leading on to a more robust, young barrier – a “do not pass for now” moment, the oak on guard. The palate`s black fruit is light on its feet, even with its depth and quality there is a refined side. It runs consistently, and has elegant potential. There is a fine line of fruit, the flavour emerging as blueberry with space, breeze, minerality around it. Good balance, very good length, very promising. From 2014. 2025-27 Nov 2010

La revue des vins de France: A great success. silky, rich with good balance.

Guide Gilbert et gaillard : (94/100) Deep color. Very expressive nose blending notes of cherry, cacao and spices. The mouth is at the same time generous, mellow and polished. we can find the same aromatic palette there. A top vintage bringing power and finesse.

Côte-Rôtie La Germine 2009

John Livingstone: ****(*)

The two sons have split the wine into two cuvees, successfully. Now one of the leading names, thier vineyards centred in the southern sector.

(casks) good full red; toffee and ripe crop elements on the nose, baked fruit, cold Darjeeling tea – this is wide, classy, the fruits resemble raspberry, blackberry. Good strike of clear black fruit at the outset of the palate: lots of promise for the future. It picks up ripe tannins that lend it weight, a licorice flavouring. The finale is supple, rubbery, gummy – this needs time. Inside there lies true fruit with a suave texture about it. Assured length, good balance. From 2014. 2023-26. Release Sept 2011. Nov 2010

The wine spectator : 92 points
This has a gutsy core of anise, blackberry and Black Forest cake, but the edges are polished, with toasty spice, violet and cherry compote flavors coursing through the finish. Should settle in nicely with brief cellaring. Drink now through 2019.—J.M.

Robert Parker : 90 points

The Duclaux brothers have turned out two exceptional Cote Roties in 2009. Both are seductive, fruit-forward efforts that are capable of lasting a decade.

The 2009 Cote Rotie La Germine reveals abundant raspberry fruit notes intermixed with notions of flowers, cedarwood, pepper and smoke as well as a hint of bacon fat. This complex, round, medium to full-bodied, lush Cote Rotie can be enjoyed over the next decade.

Le Guide des meilleurs de France 2012 (17.5/20).

Le Guide Hachette 2012.

Guide Gilbert et Gaillard : (91/100)
Intensive bright red color. Expressive nose, extremely hiring, linking the ripe black fruits, an acidulous tonality and a discreet spicy note. In mouth the same uprightness, the same tipicity. Aromas are clean, frank and persistent.

Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2008

The wine spectator (Blog by James Molesworth)

The 2008 Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge (which debuted in the '05 vintage) is a selection of their best barrels from the lieu-dit of the same name. It's 100 percent Syrah, and aged in nearly half new oak. It offers bay leaf, mulled red cherry and light olive shadings with a nice supple texture for the vintage. Both (Maison Rouge and La Germine) could potentially be outstanding, which is impressive for the vintage.

This has become a domaine to watch.

Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2007 :

Wine spectator : 92 points

Dark and brawny, with a lots of briar-edged tapenade and tabacco notes racing along with a dark core of black currant, braised fig and mulled spice notes. There's lots of iron grip on the finnish, especially for the vintage. Best from 2011 through 2021.

Robert Parker : (90-93/100)

The 100% Syrah cuvee, the 2007 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge exhibits notes of Burning embers, tapenade, jammy black cherries, licorice, and spice box. It is a full-bodied, lush, sexy 2007 that should drink compellingly well for 10-12 years.

Brothers David and Benjamin Duclaux have ratcheted up their game considerably as this has become one of the best of the small estate bottlers of Cote Rotie. Their cellars and vineyards are at the southern end of the appellation, in the sectors known as Coteaux de Tupin and Maison Rouge. Their winemaking style utilizes little new oak, but they believe in 100% destemming and the aging of the wines in 500-liter demi-muids, and occasionally smaller, used 228-liter casks. Their flagship wine, Maison Rouge, is 100% Syrah from the Cote Blonde. The 2007s are impressive efforts for this vintage.

This has a lacely framework, with black tea and cedar notes guiding the soft core of red and black cherry fruit, incense and dark olive flavors, which glide through the supple finish. There's nice latent minerality. Best from 2018 through. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Robert Parker : (89-91/100)

“Brothers David and Benjamin Duclaux have ratcheted up their game considerably as this has become one of the best of the small estate bottlers of Cote Rotie. The 2007s are impressive efforts for this vintage.”

“The 2007 Cote Rotie La Germine offers up lovely aromas of bacon fat, spring flowers, sweet raspberries and black cherries, camphor, and forest floor. Long, lush, supple-textured, and sensual, it should drink beautifully for at least a decade.”

The Wine enthusiast : 89

"Attractive and séductive, with floral berry aromas mixing with notes of sour plum, light oak, sousbois and spice. The palate is fairly full and creamy, and overall this is a really nice, functional, solid wine with just enough heft and toast to qualify as “modern” in style. Made with 5 % viognier. "

Côte-Rôtie La Germine 2006 :

Robert Parker, Wine advocate (90/100)

"From a top-notch vintage for Duclaux, the 2006 Cote Rotie La Germine boasts a fragrant bouquet of sweet red and black fruits intermixed with hints of caramel, forest floor, licorice, and bacon fat. Round, generous, seductive , and seamlessly constructed, it should provide immense pleasure over the next decade. Brothers David and Benjamin Duclaux have ratcheted up their game considerably as this has become one of the best of the small estate bottlers of Cote Rotie . About 5% Viognier is co-fermented with Syrah for the La Germine, and their flagship wine, Maison Rouge, is 100% Syrah from the Cote Blonde. These are all exceptional wines , with the 2006s showing even better from bottle than they did from barrel."

The Wine spectator, (92/100)

Toasty but otherwise reticent now, with black tea, coffee, crushed plum and braised fig notes backed by slightly firm cocoa powder dusted tannins. Yet there's plenty of stuffing in reserve, so this should knit together fully with mid-term cellaring. Best from 2010 through 2020

Robert Parker, wine advocate (93/100)

"Absolutely sensational , and vastly superior to what I tasted from barrel, is the brilliant 2006 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge. Its dense purple color is followed by a gorgeously sweet perfume of scorched earth, frying lard, sweet raspberries and black cherries, and floral as well as tapenade undertones. Full-bodied with excellent concentration and a layered, multidimensional finish with noble sweet tannins , this beauty can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years. The Wine spectator (93/100)

Ripe and focused , with a gorgeous, racy beam of raspberry, blackberry and black currant fruit held together by suave structure and lilting incense, fruitcake and warm espresso notes. There's very solid drive on the finish . The debut for this cuvee and a new high water mark for this domaine. Best from 2010 through 2020. JM

Côte-Rôtie 2004 :

Robert Parker (87)

These two brothers are up-and-coming producers in Cote Rotie making soft Cote Blonde-styled Cote Rotie from 100% destemmed fruit. The 2004 is a very successful wine which, like most of their wines, includes about 5% Viognier that is co-fermented with the Syrah. Deep ruby in color with some sweet kirsch-like notes intermixed with hints of smoke, herbs, and some apricot, this wine has good acidity, attractive fruit, and medium body. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. It is very much in the style of some of the Jasmin Cote Roties.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (90-92 points)

“Deep, bright red. Suave red berry aromas, with a vibrant note of violet. Silky and elegant in texture (2004 has burgundy tannins, says Benjamin Duclaux) with bright, sweet raspberry fruit and no meaty or earthy notes. This understated wine is all about fruits and fresh flowers. Finishes with fine,

Guide Hachette 2007.

“Benjamin and David work in the vines and vinify together their estate situated in the southern sector of the appellation. Their principal is simple: to make wine from the 5.5 ha they possess in Côte Rôtie. The 2004 is already open and expesses a harmonious bouquet, with notes of smoke, grill, red fruit and spices. The mouth is concentrated with a lot of volume and can potential be aged for a long time – three years minimum. “

Côte-Rôtie 2003 :

La revue des Vins de France.

"Sanguine, spicy, mineral. Mouth of great volume with tannins a bit extracted, yet harmony is respected in this solid wine."

Robert Parker. (93/100)

"The superb, opaque purple-hued 2003 Côte-Rôtie boasts a big, sumptuous bouquet of bacon fat, honeysuckle, litchi nuts, and jammy black cherries and cassis. Dense and full-bodied, with abundant fruit and glycerin as well as plush, opulent, voluptuous texture, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 10-14 years, it is the finest Côte-Rôtie I have yet tasted from Duclaux."

Guide Hachette 2006.

"Macerated three weeks in open vat, this wine maturate in 228 and 600 litters oak barrels (15% of new oak). The two brothers look to express all the elegance of côte-rôtie in this hot vintage. With success. Same expression (spices, laurel, black fruits) is present as well in the nose as in the mouth. The structure of the mouth is very fresh. A wine already agreeable to drink, but asks for at least four years to discover all of its secrets."

Le guide vert 2006 édité par la RVF, le classement 2006 des meilleurs vins.

"This classic domaine of Côte-Rôtie has vineyards solely in the southern sector and make wines above all fin and delicate, the wines are quite dense yet remaining supple and fin. The 2003 Côte-Rôtie is a serious wine, well-structured with solid tannins."

COTE-ROTIE 2002 :

Guide Hachette 2005 .

“Coup de Coeur” by Hachette guide for the vintage 1998, this family estate reiterates the exploit with the vintage 2002, proving its control of the vinification with this elegant, powerful, complex and harmonious wine. The oakyness accompanies by the strong tanins but fin, and the fineness comes through on blueberry aromas, dry fruits, cocoa and smoky. A great success in a difficult vintage.”

La Revue des Vins de France.

“we liked Côte-Rôtie duclaux : this wine had a traditional style, with fruit and spicy flavours. The final is neat and elegant.”

Cuisine et Vins de France (#°100)

“David Duclaux is one of the two presidents of the appellation. The vintage 2001 and 2002 come in the lead of the tasting for their fineness and their elegance. The vintage 2002 has small game flavour and a spicy attack with black fruit. Tannins are delicate and ripe.

“Made with the two grape varietals authorised in this vineyard, the syrah and viognier, this wine has notes of red fruits, black fruits and pepper. The white grape variety, Viognier, gives a touch of floral flowers. Profound in the mouth, its fills palate with pepper and tabacco flavours. Ripe and velvety tannins. Well structured wine, exquisite fineness. Wine with good aging capacity.”

Guide Fleurus des Vins 2006 ( 19/20 )

An intense ruby color with nuances of violets, its brilliance dulled by its density. The nose presents quite a lot of elegance, though it remains still a little tight, with some aeration you get small notes of black and red fruits (cassis, cherry, prune), also the aromas of liquorice and violets. The attack is rich and suave with the tastes of plenty of Fruit. The mouth is marked by present acids but not dominated and by very fine and rich tannins.

The final is very long with aromas of liquorice and pepper. The finesse and concentration of this wine announce a great bottle. This aromatic cuvee stays in its reserve. The domaine is gaining a reputation only re-confirmed by this vintage and they exceptional work together.
